În România sunt diagnosticate anual aproximativ 80.000 de cazuri noi de cancer și aproape 50.000 de decese sunt provocate de această boală. 

Statisticile plasează România printre țările cu mortalitate ridicată de cancer, ceea ce se explică prin depistarea tardivă a maladiei precum şi prin durata de aşteptare din momentul diagnosticării şi până la începerea efectivă a tratamentului,  potrivit unui studiu realizat de World Health Organization — WHO (Organizaţia Mondială a Sănătăţii). Această povară poate fi redusă prin depistarea precoce a cancerului și managementul pacienților cu cancer. Există o șansă mai mare de vindecare dacă boala este diagnosticată din timp și este tratată adecvat.

Conform datelor statistice ale IRO Iaşi, la începutul anului 2018 existau în evidenţa spitalului 12330 de cazuri, 2795 de cazuri noi fiind înregistrate doar în 2017. Aceste cazuri au necesitat 32570 şedinţe de radioterapie (servicii ambulatorii).

Astfel, perioada de aşteptare din momentul diagnosticării pacienţilor până la începerea efectivă a tratamentului prin radioterapie pentru pacienţii din regiunea de Nord-Est a ţării este de cca 70 de zile, în condiţiile în care perioada maxim admisă este de 28 de zile.

Ce este radioterapia?

Radioterapia este folosirea radiaţiei ionizante în afecţiunile maligne şi unele afecţiuni benigne selectate. Aproximativ 60-80% dintre pacienţii cu cancer sunt expuşi la radioterapie cel puţin o dată în decursul bolii. Radioterapia poate fi folosită cu scop curativ, în terapii adjuvante (intensificând eficiența altor tratamente), în scop paliativ (când vindecarea nu este posibilă iar obiectivul este controlul local sau remedierea simptomatică) sau în scop profilactic (protector).

Astăzi, tehnologia terapiei cu radiaţii este atât de avansată încât razele X pot fi personalizate pe forma tumorii şi transmise direct către zona vizată cu un grad înalt de precizie şi intensitate.

Un diagnostic precum cel de cancer este mai mult decât suficient pentru a te arunca în plină criză existențială.

Accesul pacienților români cu cancer la radioterapie este astfel de multe ori un lux. În căutarea salvării, mulți pacienți merg spre alte centre de radioterapie din străinătate. Dacă în clinicile din străinătate merg doar bolnavii cu dare de mână, în România, radioterapia este decontată în totalitate de stat. Problema este că, la mijlocul anului trecut, în toată țara existau doar 23 de centre de radioterapie, 13 dintre acestea funcționând în clinici private. Pentru zecile de mii de pacienți cu cancer acest număr este total insuficient. În consecință, unii bolnavi sunt nevoiți să aștepte, totul în timp ce boala evoluează, uneori foarte repede. Se mai pune și problema locurilor de cazare, pentru pacienții plecați la radioterapie în alte județe pentru o perioadă de câteva săptămâni.

Astfel, doar trei din zece români care au nevoie de radioterapie beneficiază de acest tratament. Avem cele mai puţine aparate din UE. În timp ce media europeană este de cinci aparate la un milion de locuitori, la noi există unul la un milion, incluzându-le aici şi pe cele din sistemul la privat.

În tot acest peisaj sumbru, există însă și o rază de speranță.

Spitalul Elytis Hospital Hope Iaşi,  care functioneaza de 5 ani, având un numar de 150 de paturi, în toate specialitǎţile medicale şi chirurgicale, îşi propune realizarea unui CENTRU DE EXCELENŢĂ ÎN TRATAREA CANCERULUI, cu infrastructură şi echipamente de ultimă generaţie, oferind practici radioterapeutice la standarde internaţionale, cu o echipă de specialiști bine formaţi, capabili să folosească şi să urmeze tehnologii avansate.

Locaţia este în Iaşi, b-dul Poitiers, nr. 10.

Lucrările pentru realizarea acestui proiect de avengură sunt la stadiul de construcţie şi amenajări şi vor fi finalizate până în decembrie 2019. Valoarea acestor lucrări au fost estimate la 3 milioane de euro.

Dotările pentru acest centru, în valoare de 20 milioane de euro,  vor începe în luna ianuarie 2020 şi vor include echipamente de diagnosticare şi de tratare a cancerului prin radioterapie de ultimă generaţie.

In Romania, there are approximately 80,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients per year, and approximately 50,000 deaths per year are caused by this condition.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Romania is a country with a high cancer-related mortality, due to delay in diagnosis and a long waiting time to receive the appropriate treatment. This disease burden could be reduced given an early diagnosis and effective treatment.

According to statistical analysis performed by IRO Iasi, at the beginning of 2018 there were 12,330 cancer cases within the hospital register, with 2,795 cases registered in 2017 alone. These cases required 32,570 radiotherapy sessions (ambulatory services).

Therefore, the waiting time for a newly diagnosed patient to begin radiotherapy-based treatment in the North-Eastern region of the country is approximately 70 days, despite the fact that the maximum approved period is 28 days.

What is radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy is represented by the use of ionising radiation for the treatment of malignant and some selected benign conditions. Approximately 60-80% of patients suffering from cancer will undergo at least one radiotherapy session as part of their treatment. Radiotherapy can be used as a curative measure, as an additional therapy (to increase the efficacy of other treatments), for palliative care (to reduce symptoms when a cure is not possible) or as prophylactic therapy.

Nowadays, the technology used for radiotherapy is so advanced, as the X-rays can be personalised according to the tumour and transmitted directly to the area of the tumour with a high precision and intensity.

A cancer diagnosis can lead to an existential crisis. Unfortunately, the access to radiotherapy is often considered a luxury for Romanian cancer patients. To seek help, many patients look for radiotherapy centres abroad. Whereas in the clinics abroad radiotherapy is a very expensive option, in Romania radiotherapy is fully funded by the state. The major issue is that, as of the middle of last year, there were only 23 radiotherapy centres in the whole country, 13 of which operated within private clinics. For the tens of thousands of cancer patients, this number is insufficient. As a consequence, there is a long waiting time before the patient can undergo this treatment, while the disease does not wait, it progresses very rapidly. Moreover, there is also an accommodation issue for patients from other parts of the country, who need to be there for a few weeks at a time.

For these reasons, only 3 out of 10 Romanian patients who need radiotherapy have the possibility to undergo this treatment. Romania has the fewest radiotherapy devices in the European Union. The average number of radiotherapy devices in Europe is 5 per million people, whereas in Romania this is reduced to 1 device per million people, including the ones present in the private sector.

There is hope to change this.

Elytis HOPE Hospital in Iasi, which has been operating for five years, having 150 beds within all medical and surgical specialties, aims to open a Centre for Excellence in the Treatment of Cancer, with infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology, offering radiotherapy at international standards, with a team of experts in the field, trained and capable of using advanced technology.

The work for this complex project is in the construction and design state and will be finalised in December 2019. The total costs were estimated to be around 3 million euros.

The centre devices addition, worth approximately 20 million euros, will begin in January 2020 and will include state-of-the-art diagnosis and radiotherapy equipment.
